Brian J. Adkins, M.D., MBA

Dr. Adkins founded The Adkins Academy, LLC (now The Adkins Academy, Inc) after several years of teaching and mentoring youth and adult students in the Greater Washington, D.C. area while also attending college and medical school at Howard University. With more than 15 years of experience teaching and inspiring students, he has developed easily understood logic-based approaches to helping students prepare for standardized exams and matriculate into college and professional school. Dr. Adkins has spent several years instructing students on how to perform well on exams such as the SAT, ACT, TEAS VI, HESI A2, ISEE, SSAT, NCLEX, and other cumbersome standardized exams. In addition to completing several complex standardized exams himself, including the medical college admissions test (MCAT) and various medical board exams (USMLE STEP exams), Dr. Adkins has also contributed to and developed standardized exam questions and strategies that have proven extremely beneficial for thousands of students. He has provided his expertise to many public and private organizations serving junior high, high school, and adult students within the U.S. and even internationally. He holds an MBA from Loyola University Maryland. In addition to empowering the lives of students, Dr. Adkins is also actively involved in population health management initiatives and public health advocacy to ameliorate the health of many. Dr. Adkins is an adjunct faculty member at Montgomery Community College in Germantown, MD. in the Natural Sciences Department where he instructs courses to pre-medical, pre-nursing, and nursing students.


Kadija Abounit, Ph.D., M.B.A.

Dr. Abounit received her Master of Science in Cellular Biology and Physiology degree from the University Paris Diderot in Paris, France. She then came to the United States where she earned her doctorate in Pharmacology from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. She subsequently joined the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research at the U. S. Food and Drug Administration in Maryland as a post-doctoral fellow. During her years of scientific training, she has developed an expertise in the fields of cell biology and pharmacology. She has extensively studied the role of calpain proteases and macroautophagy in the pathogenesis of various ischemia-related diseases (breast cancer, stroke, and myocardial infarction). Dr. Abounit has published several peer-reviewed articles and reviews. To take her scientific career to the next level, she has completed an M.B.A. in the Emerging Leader MBA program at Loyola University Maryland. She has mentored and instructed several high school and college students in the sciences while in her Ph.D. program as well as after completing her Ph.D. She has a passion for empowering students and preparing the next generation for successful leadership and academic excellence.


Damian McCarthy, M.D.

Dr. McCarthy serves as a medical professions academic advisor and standardized exam instructor for The Adkins Academy, Inc. He is a clinical research associate at Georgetown University Lombardi Cancer Center. He received his M.D. from Howard University College of Medicine and his undergraduate degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Oakwood University. In addition to clinical research, he was engaged in laboratory research in the areas of cancer, immunology, and chemistry. Throughout his collegiate and professional career he has helped to tutor and mentor students of all ages, seeking to motivate and empower them to achieve their academic and personal goals. Dr. McCarthy continues to help students navigate the rough terrain of matriculating into college, medical school, nursing school, and other professional schools with frequent lectures & workshops to college students. He believes that balance and effectiveness are the cornerstones to achieving a life of happiness and success.


Alexander Albert, M.A.

Alexander Albert, M.A.Mr. Alexander is a dynamic academic instructor who utilizes a multifaceted approach to test preparation and mastery of reading comprehension and language concepts. Naturally inclined to linguistics and psychology, Mr. Albert focuses his test preparation lessons on an analysis of the test structure, section design, question typology, and answer analysis. It is his belief and method that standardized tests are legitimate IQ exams that can be conquered with a strategic approach. His instruction yields a methodical and systematic approach to admissions exams that is designed to maximize the innate potential of each student as well as to give them confidence that their approach is scientific. He uses his psychological background to reduce and reverse the intimidation factor of standardized exams. He is recognized as a natural communicator and a personable instructor. His students have generally increased their Verbal scores at least 200 points on exams like the SAT. As he would say, “It’s the method; it works. Use the method to your advantage, and you will do well.”


Michelle McBroom, M.S.M., M.S.E.

Michelle McBroom, M.S.M., M.S.E.Ms. McBroom is an exceptional communicator, educator, and seasoned professional in the pharmaceutical sector. She joins The Adkins Academy team with over 20 years of academic and professional experience and is passionate about helping clients achieve success through stellar interpersonal and professional communication skills. She holds a Master of Science in Education from DePaul University in Chicago as well as a Master of Science in Marketing Communication from Illinois Institute of Technology. Additional, she holds two certificates from Georgetown University in Legislative Studies and International Business Management.

She is currently an Executive Sales Specialist for a Fortune 100 pharmaceutical company with 15 years of sales experience. During her career she has developed an expertise in presentation skills and public speaking. She has instructed graduate students on resume writing and interviewing skills. Her enthusiasm and passion are contagious and will help clients reach their full potential when preparing for their professional endeavors.
