Depending on your level of education, you can either take the NCLEX-PN (practical nurse) or the NCLEX-RN (registered nurse) examination. Those who obtain a diploma in licensed practical nursing or licensed vocational nursing can take the NCLEX-PN exam. Those who have completed an associate’s degree in nursing (ADN) or a bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) can take the NCLEX-RN exam.
Both exams focus on four specific areas of practice. The first is a safe, effective care environment. This is about being able to maintain hygiene and control infections. The second element is health promotion and maintenance. Preventative healthcare is one of the most important fields of work today. Then, there is psychosocial integrity. This looks at your ability to cope with the stresses of being a nurse and also focuses on being able to deliver mental health care. The final and largest element of the NCLEX exam is physiological integrity, which accounts for 43% to 67% of all questions. This is about your ability to deliver proper nursing care.
In the past, all NCLEX questions were multiple choice. Although many are still of the multiple-choice type, a lot of questions are now in a different format. But 90% of the questions continue to be multiple choice. Questions come in three levels. Level 1 is general knowledge and generally delivered as multiple choice. Level 2 is on analysis and application, which may or may not be multiple choice. Level 3 questions are the hardest of all and require you to apply facts, processes and rules in order to answer them. Often, these questions are open questions. Around 90% of the exam is made up of level 2 and 3 questions.
Students will attend one of their regional Pearson Centers in order to sit the examination. They are delivered electronically. The number of questions that need to be answered varies per student, as they are generated based on the answers of your previous question. As such, you might have to answer anything between 75 and 265 questions. However, only 60 of the 75 questions actually count, with the other 15 being trial questions. You have six hours to complete the test, with a number of break times included. The passing mark depends on how you compare to predetermined standards.
In order to take the NCLEX exam, you must first ask your state board of nursing to be licensed. If they believe you have the necessary skills to become a nurse in the state, they will put you forward for the NCLEX examination. To confirm your place, you will receive the Authorization to Take the Test (ATT) letter.
At present, the cost of an NCLEX exam is $0.
You will get into the habit of taking NCLEX-RN Practice Test Questions every day, from the very beginning of nursing school. Just if it’s just 5 questions a day… the day you sit for your NCLEX-RN exam you’ll notice a difference. You will be happy to learn that there is no clear study plan leading to success on the NCLEX; each approach it differently in their own way. The NCLEX is a one-of-a-kind review that encompasses a huge amount of nursing profession-related information. Knowing the fundamentals, being able to bring together bits of knowledge while thinking beyond the box, and setting priorities will never mean as much as it does on your test day.
It’s important to practice questions on a regular basis so you can familiarize yourself with the various types of questions that can be posted to you on your exam and you won’t be taken by surprise. Many students make the greatest mistake by waiting before they graduate to start answering NCLEX questions and properly plan for their exams. This can generate more tension than it should be worth and cause you to get overwhelmed. Furthermore, if you procrastinate in planning for your NCLEX you may lose sight of your main target and maybe even delay taking your NCLEX until a later date. Shortly after you take your first exams during nursing school, you should learn what study patterns work best for you … and once you find out what works best for you, stick to it to ensure the best chances of success.
The tools you can use to prepare for your NCLEX in this day and age are pretty much infinite. Resources vary from textbooks, YouTube videos, taking part in NCLEX analysis workshops, and more. Training opportunities and tools are limitless, and you really shouldn’t have trouble finding one that fits for you … and you shouldn’t have any excuses for failing NCLEX.
It is also understandable that some of the students are just not successful test-takers. We feel a great deal of anxiety when faced with an exam and are easily overwhelmed, which, in effect, significantly affects their grades. You will have many, many assessments in the nursing school and you will discover things about yourself that you possibly would never have had otherwise. You should do your utmost to figure out what works best for you when faced with an exam to relieve your stress and reduce your anxiety because the NCLEX won’t have mercy … you either pass or fail.
Generally, studying for the NCLEX is a nice practice to get into while still in nursing school. Effective planning will improve the odds of succeeding in a first attempt significantly. Learning how to deal and handle your stress and what study behaviors work best for you will lead to improved trust on the day you sit for your NCLEX exam with a greater chance of success.
